Ok age has grabbed my brains, CRS has set in big time and I can't for the life of me figure out a noise in a motor, That i'm trying to make ready for a cobra kit .

another 1965 K code hipo 289, the cam was swapped to a flat tappet hydro from the solid lifter, the PO stated he installed it with a new timing chain kit, after when running it has a steady knock that sounds like it's coming from the timing cover area. almost like a wrist pin knock .
i know they had a hatchet weight on the crank but was it part of the timing gears or a separate part? if it was could the wider chain be knocking on the weight,
anyone remember theses beasts and issues to watch out for?

As soon as I started reading I thought wrist pin (had that happen on a 302), but you seem to rule that out? Pull one spark plug wire at a time, does it go away when a certain cylinder has spark removed?

yes i did ken, have gone though the normal mechanics troubleshooting, pretty much ruled out a piston or pin knock, the sound seems to be from under the timing cover .

internet searching i've found 65 and 66 had a special timing chain narrower than a standard with the hatchet weight roll pinned to the lower gear also has it's own timing cover so maybe as it turns it hits the chain making me hope one of the older members could remember what could happen,

propper chain.gear kits are very rare to find with 1 just found on ebay for $285.00 ,i sure don't want to drop that much and not be right

    for a update
i gave the SB to the local engine machine shop, yes timing chain was hitting the cover and KEN was right, i was wrong , wrist pin , so we went the 020 over route, crank was still in spec for standard , let him reassemble it .rebuild the oem heads and dyno roll it for break in, real world 306 hp at the flywheel . it now sits in a superformance cobra roller with a 5spd tkx behind it

please guys am i right in that the block was cast 1965 oct 25 the heads 1965 nov 4? will this fit in for a late nov 65 built 66 mustang in building a date correct restoration?

did ford do any balancing of the rods and pistons? these rods are all well ground into for what looks like lightening work

I'm by no means a 289 expert but wouldn't the J in the 5J26 date stamp indicate Sept? November would be L?

thats what i'm trying to figure out ken,, i do know there are 1 or 2 letters meaning the month that don't get used which 1 or 2 ? as they could be mistaken for a number ,
one head has a k the other a n the block has a hand stamp of 27 n on a ear.
other wise we know it came out of a wreaked 1965 gt350 in around 1972 placed into a 32 ford where it's sat unused since 1978 ,yet lack of the stamped in vin number could possibly mean it's a warranty long block, yet another issue is why the rods look like they were match balanced, fords are or were externally balanced ,
this one has me lost, if it's a date code for a early 66 we know of a gt350 in need thats getting restored ,

found a web site called mustang tek https://www.mustangtek.com/ OM the information, turns out ford doesn't use the letter i making the j for sept, k is oct , making this motor a very early 1966 dated 289, total lack of the stamped in vin number means it was a warranty or a over the parts counter long block,
