I have a 1948 ford f3 w/239 flathead v8,4 speed an no synchro. It is a pain to shift so I am wondering what automatic or standard transmission would fit without too much modification.

This is just a suggestion. The 239 flat head was used till 1953. The 4 speed synchronized tran's use were either Warner or possibly NP (New Process). Check online, ask, for example "What 4 speed transmission used in 1953 Ford F-350?" or each year back to 48. Bolting in depends on if your existing 4 speed, Crash Type transmission, is attached with 4 bolts or a complete round SAE type bell housing. What Ford succeeded to should be your easiest bolt in. There are kits from different vendors to put a the very common (and reliable!) C4 transmission behind one.
