Hello folks. I am in the process of restoring a 1978 F-150 Ranger with A/C (460ci 2WD, C6 auto). The heater core is leaking. I ordered new heater core but searching the web, I found that replacing the core involves removing the entire evaporator housing from under the hood which involves removing nuts and bolts from under the dash. I found some instructions that I've uploaded with this post. I am also replacing most of the A/C components (Condenser, Compressor, Receiver Drier / Accumulator, Expansion Valve) and I'm thinking I should replace the A/C evaporator while I'm in there. I would be interested in anyone's experience with this project before I dive into it and would be willing to share some short cuts or tips when doing this job.

    Thanks,
    Rick

78R, Welcome! I can't help you, as never did that project or similar. Only installed aftermarket AC in my 66 F-250. Tackeling that job, I would replace the evaporator because your in there. Shame to do it all over again in a couple of years. Hopefully someone else can help on tips, advice. Good Luck, Cap

    1973/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco:

Factory installed integral A/C is combined with the heater. The A/C controls are in the same panel as the heater controls.

HUGE A/C evaporator case located on the right (Passenger Side) rear corner of the engine compartment.

If the A/C in the truck doesn't match this criteria, it's dealer installed, and there are TWO different types.

Thanks, this is factory, not dealer. What are the two different types?

    1) Deluxe dealer installed A/C is combined with the heater.

The two A/C switches are located in the HUGE dash bezel that sweeps across the entire right side of the dash, covering up the glove box.

There is a separate "hang-on" glove box bolted to the bottom of the dash.

    2) Economy dealer installed A/C is not combined with the heater.

The two A/C switches are located in a panel that also contains two A/C registers.

This panel fits into the dash to the left of the glove box.

New to site/member. I have, apparently, the econo dealer installed a/c on my new to us 79 f100. Do you
know of any videos on removing the heater box to get to fan/core. It seems to be fighting me.
