Looking for some info, my son has the above and is getting lousy fuel mileage and was wondering if it was normal. he is averaging around 8-9 MPG. it a 4x4, but man that is lousy for a 302. I thought the fuel injection would have way better mileage than that.

Your insights would be greatly appreciated.

    All Stock/Original?
    What maintenance has been done?
    Pulled Codes?

He got it from his sister-in-law so no telling. What is the average MPG on these?

Sadly I have known them to get that, but more common is 12 to about 16...

    I would check for codes.
Check the Cat (they are old and failing).
Do a full tune up including All the ignition parts including the wires.
    Clean the MAS.
Check the Temp sender & T/stat.
Clean the Idle Air Control unit.
    Check all the vacuum lines.
    Check the tire pressure!

    How many miles on it?
Not knowing the service history doesn't help. Getting it from Sister in-law gives a bit more information. Just figure there has been no maintenance done on the truck and it will need a full tune-up and all fluids services. As said above check the codes and sensors.

I'll check on the mileage. Most likely high mileage.

Good running 5.0 with a highway rear gearing ( 3.55 or higher ) should give you 15-19 mpg highway
    4.9 about the same
    5.8 10- 14
7.5, 10 loaded, empty, highway, city.........

Rob it could have the cross fuel flow problem.

Pumping from one tank to the other!

Change the o2 sensor. No test. Just change it. That puter is dumb, only a few inputs.
Check all vacuum lines and map sensor also. If you know how, you can use a meter to check the o2 sensor readings.

This, ^^^^^, if the in tank check valve is bad the return fuel will go to the opposite take throwing off the mileage calculation.
I average about 14mpg and that can being driving like I stole it. But you have seen my pickup it's been modified quite a bit.

Also do a compression check on engine, if there's low compression then it's pumping losses and the only way to get it back is a rebuild.
