1996 F350 IDI Stalling out

    All the sudden my 96 F350 IDI is stalling out. It starts and runs fine BUT when I quickly let off the fuel peddle the engine reduces its RPM too much and it just stops. This happens rather quickly. Even parked, if I tap the peddle it revs and comes down and stalls. Happens every time the same way. If I work the peddle I can prevent it from stalling but not an easy thing to do. It will always restart no problem. No problems with idle, shifting or pulling a load. Its got me stumped as to what to look at. Any suggestion would me appreciated.

    Assuming it's not water or other contamination in the fuel, and the fuel filter isn't clogged then it's likely the injection pumping under-speed governor. It can start sticking and not catch the engine slowing down. A common thing to try is a bunch of diesel fuel conditioner like Stanadyne, a lot more than it recommends as the normal dosage - like the 1 or 2 entire bottles per full tank of fuel. If the problem doesn't go away after a tankful, then either the pump is failing and needs a rebuild, or the stop solenoid needs replacing. Rebuild will run $200 - $400.

    no such animal.
    96 will have a powerstroke. the last 7.3 IDI was mid year 1994
