    1987 Ranger with 2.9 L V6.

Dropped some grit into the intake manifold when taking the fuel rail off. Should I remove the manifold to clean it, and if so, do I need to de-mesh the distributor from the gear, or is there a splined shaft that it slides off of? Diagrams did not answer this question.

    Any help is appreciated.

I would unless you have a good way to look down there to make sure you get it all (like a bore scope). One grain of sand gets stuck on a valve seat and it'll burn a valve. Once grain gets next to a piston wall wedged next to the ring it'll scrub it. Can't help with the distributor part, not familiar with the 2.9L.

You should not need to remove the dizzy on a 2.9 to remove the intake manifold, though it may make it more of a challenge to re-install with a new gasket.
I would make a reducer for the shop-vac hose, and vacuum all you can reach out, and call it a day.
