I'm having trouble spotting the difference between the 2v 4.6l engine and the 3v engine. Carfax isn't any help. Is there a quick way to see? Looks like the 3v gives much more towing capacity.

There should be some mention on the intake cover maybe. As far as I know, there weren't any 2 valves after 06.

    Using Ken's VIN method there is a 2008 & a 2010 F150 with the 2V engine.

They continued the 2V until 2010.
    For 2009-2010:
    2v 4.6L base engine
    3v 4.6L mid level
3v 5.4L and 6.2L engines as the higher end offerings.

2011 dropped both 4.6L engines and the 5.4L. Replaced by the 3.7L, 3.5L Ecoboost and 5.0L.

    2015 F150: 3.5L replaced 3.7L, 6.2L dropped, 2.7L Eco-Boost introduced, 3.5L Ecoboost and 5.0L continued.

The thing is, 2V at one time referred to a 2 barrel carburetor, 3V referred to the 3 deuces used on 1962/63 390 M Birds, 1962/64 Galaxie 406/427.

Do not all the 3 v engines have VVT ?
they should be easily identified by the solenoids in the front of the valve cover .
