Hi All, just picked up what appears to be either a 48, but the VIN tells me it's a 49 or maybe even 50. Wondering if anyone could help me decode it.

The VIN is 98RTL237***. (left the last 3 out). Suffix of SP (I'm guessing St Paul MN.)

It looks to say F-1 on the hood trim, but side markers show "F-4". It's a dually as well, 134" wheelbase with a flathead V-8.

Well, appears firewall stamping's are not the whole complete story, they varied from plant to plant.

This link seems to offer you other places on the truck for a VIN, and it might tell you if you cab and chassis are the same as when Mfg'ed.
