I recently bought a 1979 f-150 and the transfer case is bad, only front shaft is working. Question is, can I take the transfer case off of an '81 or '83 and replace it? Or should I get a rebuild kit? Thanks

The driveshaft length will almost certainly be wrong with a different case.
Shift'r linkage can be a bit of a pain.
Beyond that if the front of the case is the same (Ford) then yes it will bolt up.
What case do you have now?

It has the NP-203. Have never messed with one of these so not sure how hard it'd be to try and repair vs replace

if you replace it with a gear drive get a 205 and the linkage that will give you two wheel drive

I already have a 2wd, need this a 4x4. Dirt roads turn to mud

you misunderstand the 203 is full time four wheel drive not good for fuel mileage the 205 is part time box that has 2wd 4wd high and 4wd low range
    roscoe

If budget allows I would switch to a NP205 and just buy a reman'd Case
You will need the complete shifter mechanism.
You will need both front and rear Drive Shafts.
You may also need a speedometer cable.
