It is my understanding that some 1977, 1978 and 1979 standard cab 4x4 trucks had the plastic mid-ship fuel tank with a metal surround P/N 9K134 (skid plate) holding it in place. I was wondering if anyone who had to rebuild/fabricate a new one of these surrounds still has a dimensioned drawing of the surround. I can not find a used surround anywhere and would like to have one fabricated. Any help or advice would help. Thanks.

Hello, was wondering how you ended up. I need one of these surrounds as well and was thinking about making my own. Let me know what you did.

    Thanks.

I ended up finding one that was pretty rusted in the belly but overall usable. I replaced the steel in the belly, sandblasted the unit, and applied truck bed liner to it. I also had a draftsman from my office create a dimensioned CAD drawing of the part so that someone can fab from scratch if they needed to. I have that file on a thumb drive somewhere in my office. I will try and dig it up. If I find it I will pass it along.

I have been looking and thinking of how to install a spare tank in my 79 falreside long bed.
Besides in the front of the bed under my tool box. That may be my only option.
Not too much room in cab behind the seat either...Always nice to have a spare tank of fuel with you.

I wound up making my own. I took cardboard and bent it around my completely rusted out tank, and traced it out. VERY precisely. Then I laid the cardboard flat on a 4x8 sheet of 18 gauge steel I bought for $139, and used power snips to cut it out. Then I made the bends so that it was in the shape of the original. I re-used the brackets from the original, as they were thick steel and cleand up nicely - and welded them on in the same spots. There was some hand-forming where the tank narrows near the front end! It turned out great. Painted it with several coats of KBS frame paint. Bolted right up.
