I would like to have some more top-end speed in my 72 F250 without the engine running so hard. I have the 390 CI engine that handles it ok, just loud. Currently there is a 3.73 gear set. Would changing it to a 3.54 really be worth the expense and effort? How much do you think it would really lower my RPMs? I don't tow or haul often and only carry a camper shell that weighs about 500 lbs full time.

Assuming 2550 RPM at 65MPH with 32 inch tires as a ballpark, you're looking at a drop of about 150 RPM with 3.54 gears.

This would assume a manual transmission with a 1:1 ratio. But it's probably an automatic with an open torque converter so you're probably looking at a greater drop in RPM.

It is an automatic with an Art Carr build kit in it so it's not the original torque converter I was hoping get the Rpm to drop @ 500 any suggestions or should I just live with it.
