I don't know about the specific amounts in quarts, but with both you fill it up to the level of the fill plug, no less.

Ok thanks, I heard on some diffs and boxes that it need to be halfway filled, all the way filled and and finger length away from the hole to be full

Since you did not supply is what gear box and differential you have, I assumed a Ford 9", it being a 4x2. If you have a Dana, it depends on which cover you have. What differential is it?

For manuals, I've always filled to the hole, same with transfer cases.

All the rears and manual transmission get filled until the oil just starts to run back out
Anything less, will cause overheating, and bearing failure
    Especially outer axle bearings

Locking and clutch type rears require an additive to reduce friction, and keep the clutches from chattering and wearing out

Thanks guys, the transmission is a T98 and I cleaned the goop off the differential and I found a tag on one the bolts that says "Use Limited Slip, Use limited" and some numbers on the rear axle.

Get the gear oil with the limited slip additive already in it. You won't need to worry about getting the mix ratio wrong that way.

Hi, I'm having trouble finding a new oil pan for my 1966 ford f250 352 v8. Also finding rims has been a major pain. Any help would be great. 1961 - 1966 Ford F100, F250 and F350 Truck Forum Jul 11, 2023
