I was wondering if the gears and carriers are interchangeable between the 8.8 rear diffs in an Explorer and a F150 within the same years. Any differences ? I'm hoping to find a limited slip carrier to put in the Explorer differential I have.

    8.8" introduced in 1983 E/F100/150 & Bronco (9" also available thru 1986, 1987 E100/150). Explorer introduced in 1991.

I can look up the parts thru 2001, but this is far as my truck parts catalog (on Microfiche) extends.

1990/2001 Ford Light Truck Parts Catalog.

Also have 1980/89 & 1973/79 Light & Heavy Truck Parts Catalogs, 1948/56, 1957/63 & 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalogs, 1928/48 Ford Passenger Car & 1928/47 Ford Truck Chassis Parts Catalog.

And 1960 thru 1989 Ford Passenger Car Parts Catalogs, 1964/79 L/M Parts Catalogs, 1953 Ford of Canada Ltd. Ford/Mercury Chassis Parts Catalog, 1956/57 Ford Truck Chassis Parts Catalog.

Plus 1935-56 Packard & 1957/61 & 1962/64 Studebaker parts catalogs. 1957/61 includes 1957/58 Packabakers, so called because they are basically rebadged Studebakers. Most Packard "nuts" ignore these cars.

Thanks Bill, the differential I have from the Explorer is from a 1998 model year.

Gear sets are interchangeable for all 8.8" rear differentials. There are 31 and 28 spline carriers, axles/differentials must match the spline count.

    31 spline:
    1995+ Explorer
    1997+ Mountaineer
    2002+ Ranger FX4
    2005+ Mustang
    F150
    Bronco
    1999 - 2004 Mustang Cobra
2004+ Crown Vic and Town Car

    28 spline:
    Ranger
    1986 - 2004 Mustang

I'm sure I missed some, so many used the 8.8"

John, my 96 'Sploder has factory limited slip, so it is a factory option.

When I was looking for a differential at the wreckers unfortunately none of them were equipped with the limited slip so thought I'd broaden my search by finding out what else I could rob parts from. I priced a carrier at the transmission shop and they quoted me $649 , I can purchase a complete rear diff at he wreckers for $150 complete hub to hub. I was out at the dump yesterday and there is a 98 F150 there, I took the vin number came home to check it out on the internet only to find I goofed up the number and need to go back and take another reading but it doesn't open again until Tuesday.:(
