Have 1973 Ford f100 302&5 speed put starter on it cranks right up but makes knocking sound while turning over any ideas

as to the noise we will need more info, do you hear the knock cranking, does it go away after starting, what type of noise rotating knock, does the motor have good oil pressure? please try to describe it better

 

Motor has great oil pressure runs fine just while cranking it's got a knocking sound but when cranks all is fine

By the way it's a 73 Ford but has 86 roller motor it had a 3 speed I used bell housing and everything and put 5 speed in it weird thing when I got starter a 73 f100 snout was to long I got a starter for a 68 to 74 Econoline or bronco the snout is a inch shorter and fit great

Did you use the 86, 302 AND it's flywheel, clutch and 5 speed transmission?? Or mix matched 73 and 86 components?? Just to say here, although bolt patterns on the small block Ford Engines and the 240-300 six are the same and flywheels bolt either way, you cannot mix match. V8's and sixes are balanced differently. One internally balanced, the other externally balanced.

On This I'm Not Positive, the flywheel ring gear teeth maybe different in quantity and diameter, placing the starter to close or far away from it.
