I have had my truck in the shop for awile and they have found that the chunks that they pulled out are from the ring gear. a new gear set is about $350. We called a few junk yards and got a quote for $500. which way is better to go new gear set or a full rear end from a junk yard?

i would go with a new gear set.
simply because you do not know what you are getting from the junk yard. the "new" rear could end up being in worse shape than the one you took out.

I would agree, same thing could be going on with the used ones. New gears solve the problem that your having, and if you wanted to you could always change your ratios.

Don't know what your labor charge is going to be, but for the price difference, IMHO, the new ring gears is by far the better choice. Like the others said, you have a known set of circumstances versus a completely unknown wild card.

I went for the salvage yard replacement rear end on the old pickup because we were talking a couple of thousand dollars difference between repair versus junk yard replacement. The salvage yard that we used also had a 90 day replacement warranty on the rear end so I had 90 days to abuse the heck out of it and try to break it.

Knowing how FEW Ford rear ends I have seen go over the years, I am gonna go with the odds and get a decent J-yard rear end to replace the whiny one in my Ranger..........I think a J-yard unit will give you odds that will most likely fall on your side, IF you can verify the miles/condition/damage to the donor rig you pull from.
Most yards have the info on their inventory.

Most reputable yards will also give you some kind of warranty. I don't have issues dealing with wrecking yards. I had a T/C go out of my F150 took it to a shop to be fixed & 100 miles in the middle of Las Vegas blew up. I just went to a wrecking yard bought a used one & that was 30,000 miles & 2 years ago no issues.

if you look on www.car-part.com , there are a few yards in Pheonix that have 10.25 rears listed in the $300 price range with both 3.55 and 4.10 ratios.

Long gone are the days you could pick up an entire 9 inch axle and pumpkin for $100 at the salvage yard. :(

actually you can still get a 9 inch for $100.
it is the 8 lug 10.25 and 10.5 sterlings that are getting expensive.
