Hi I’m new to the forum. My sons and I recently purchased a 1964 F600 dump truck that we are fixing up for use in our business. We are having a little trouble identifying the engine and need to replace cap, rotor etc. the air cleaner suggests that it may be a 180 hp 289 but I can’t seem to find any reference that that engine was ever installed in this model of truck. Is there a good way to determine what engine it is? Also where would we find a vin?
    Thanks

VIN will be on the plate on the driver side door jamb. if it was not removed.

if it has a V8, it will most likely have been delivered with a 292 "Y" block.
can you post a picture of the engine?

Thanks for the quick reply. We found a number on the door that is listed as a warranty number not to be used for identification. Also the engine has the distributor in the front and I was led to believe that the “Y” block has the distributor is located in the rear. I’ll take a picture of the engine tomorrow and post. Thanks again for your help.

well, the warranty plate on the door is it except for the VIN stamped in the frame. and that is gonna be hard to find.

passenger side frame rail, on top of rail, basically under the alternator area. be prepared to search with a wire brush, cleaner, and rags. a strong flashlight helps too.
should start with a star, then the VIN, then end with a star.

it is kind of hard to see in the pictures. does the intake go under the valve covers?
if so it is most likely a 330 FT engine.

M is code for the 160 HP 330 FE engine. but it could also be a 331 FT engine since it is in a F600
570132 is near the end of the 64 model year.
580000 serial number started 65 model year

I did find this in another forum. The kicker is that it can with half of an oil bath air cleaner that appears to say 289 180hp. I’ll get some more picks this afternoon.

Upon closer examination it appears that the air cleaner may actually say 330 heavy duty.

The intake manifold does appear to be under the valve covers.

    289: 1963/68 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars, 1966/68 Bronco.

No such thing as a 331 FT engine.

    1964 F600: If the dizzy is behind the carb, it's a 292 Y block.

If the dizzy is in front of the carb, it's an FT engine, probably either a 330 2V Medium Duty, or 330 2V Heavy Duty.

Points, condenser, rotor, cap same for all 1958/73 FoMoCo V8's, except HiPo's with dual point dizzies.

Warranty Plate riveted to the left door face below the latch, but compare the VIN (Warranty Number) on the plate to the VIN on the registration/title to see if they match.

1961/66 F100/1100 doors are the same, some people replaced damaged left doors with used doors.

99.9% of the time, they failed to install the original Warranty Plates on the replaced doors.

Note: FE engines were not installed in anything larger than an F350 and this didn't occur until 1965.

    FT engines look very similar.

Hmmm, I see the OP posted a pic of the Warranty Plate, I'll decode it later...

DSO 73: This truck might be LDS, it was ordered from the SLC Ford district sales office.

Well she’s running and cleaned up a bit. Useable but a long way to go.

    Hi iicap
So far we have rebuilt the carb, replaced the master cylinder and the starter relay. So now it moves safely. Many, many things need attention. Next will probably be belts, plugs and wires, distro cap, etc. We are also looking for tires (as soon as $ are available). The tires are ok tread wise but are so old they don’t even have date codes on them. Short trips here and there with the occasional trip to the landfill. Probably won’t get much done ‘till spring as we have no inside space to work on it.
