    Hi y'all.

We're looking at two cheap point a to point b cars for when Rusty is out of commission and I can't get a ride from my dad (Rusty is the only automatic we have). Plus it would go to my fiance once he can get his DMV fines and license taken care of. One is a '92 Oldsmobile 88 and the other is a '99 Chevy Cavalier. Both have minor issues but they're both in our price range.

The Olds needs a new crankshaft sensor and the Chevy needs the heater hose reconnected...which is the cheaper/easier fix? The Olds I could probably do myself because there's numerous YouTube videos on how to do it but the Chevy would likely need to be taken to the mechanics...

    Anyway...opinions? Advice? Etc?

I can't really say from experience since I've never worked on either vehicle. But heater hoses SHOULDN'T be bad. At least that's what I've found on anything I've worked on.

my bet is the heater hoses are disconnected because the heater core sprung a leak.
and you need to take half the dash apart to replace the heater core.

...Think we'll go with the Oldsmobile. I found a mechanic in my area that does "house calls" so to speak so we're going to have him come over and help us out. No worrying about getting anything towed. He's a local mechanic out of work because of his disabled wife and he came highly recommended.

Personally, I don't put a lot of faith in 1990s GM cars. They didn't have their act together quality wise until the mid-2000's in my opinion. I'd buy a last generation Escort, or a Mazda or Toyota before I'd consider them. I would say Honda, but ricers drove the prices a little high.

And when someone tells you it only has minor problems, consider that if all a car had was minor problems people generally fix minor problems. My experience is there will be other issues lurking. It's kind of like A/C, if they tell you "AC is great it only needs a recharge" you know immediately they are lying, because since a recharge takes 10 minutes and a $15 can of refrigerant, they'd have done it if "only" needed that.

I haven't found anything that's a Ford that doesn't have a head gasket problem transmission problem or some other expensive fix that I can afford right now. Just needing something that will get from point a to point b and back. I'm really limited right now, unfortunately, but the Olds is not a for sure thing. It's just the best option I've found so far. :(

Can't wait for tax return season to get here...

Oh, wonderful. More snow and it's sticking the bloody road.

as much as i hate to say it, toyodas and nissans are almost impossible to kill as long as they are maintained.
the kids here buy them with 200k + miles on them to use as beaters, and the train riders buy them to use as go to the station cars.

Choosing between GM front drives is kinda like trying to choose the least uncomfortable STD..............Look for a early 2000s Taurus/late 90s Escort, or anything from yota or nissan that falls in the $$ range........ rule out any Dodge cars........ugh.

'99 Mazda Millenia? Except it's got a power steering fluid leak...

Which turns into a frozen power steering pump that throws the serpentine belt, leaving you on the side of the road............pass.

Those can be very good cars. The 3.0 is a good engine.

    3.0 Vulcan V-6 or 3.0 24 valve Duratech V-6?

Don't know, there's no pic of the engine but it is a flex-fuel.
