    I looked at a 1966 F250 today. 300 6 cylinder. 3 speed on the column. Body and floors seem very solid. It should have a flatbed, but its off right now. I'm wondering if its worth $3700 like he wants.

    The price is a tough call. You see the truck, we don't. Is it a Ford factory flatbed or one that replaced the original pick up bed. If it's cab and sheet metal is pretty straight no significant rot, price seems reasonable. Look underneath at the front cab mounts, the mid floor supports and inside under rear corners, if solid I'd think well worth the price.

    I see in your signature that your truck has the 240 I6. How do you determine that?

    Go to the link below, It will tell you how your truck left the factory. Engine, transmission, body style ( what ever kind of pickup bed or maybe factory flatbed ) Google how to determine whether a 240 or 300 Ford 6 if you suspect yours is not a 300. I have a 1966 f-250 parts truck, my 240 came out of it, 3 on the tree. 5,000 lbs GVW. The truck in my avatar came from factory with 352 V-8, 7,500 lbs GVW. When I took the 240 to machine shop for total rebuild, the kit they used for a 66, the wrist pins n pistons were to small for my connecting rods. Seem my engine is a 1971. Early 240's had wrist pin trouble, so Ford beefed it up with the heavier pistons, pins and connecting rods..

    I'm trying to get the VIN from him now. At least on LMC Motors, Ford didn't use the 240 in 65. Odd that they show it 64 - 64 and again 67 to 72. I can't believe if they had a 240 and 300 available, that the 240 would never find its way into an F250.

    Not sure that I would use and LMC listing as a choice of available engines in vehicles. Typos and omissions can happen anywhere. Again Google can/will take you to Numerous Sites for info and you can compare data. I have seen one site that says the 240 was available in 63-64 in trucks. For what I can tell and I believe. This is for F-100 thru F350, NOT larger trucks. 1964 was last year of the Y-Block V-8 and the 223 I-6. In 1965, Ford offered the 240, 300 I-6's and FE 352 V-8's. The 240 was used from 65 to 74. The 352 thru 67, then in 68 the FE-360 was introduced. I have a Motors Truck Repair Manual 1964 and a Chiltons Truck repair manual the covers 1964. There are no 240 or 300 I-6's offered, just the 223 and the 262.

    I'll tell you, I have never checked the warranty plate on MY parts truck for what engine came from the factory. The Decal on the air cleaner said 240 cubic inch six. I'll check for the heck of it.

    This one didn't have the original air filter. Unless he has it stored somewhere else. And so far he hasn't got the VIN to me.

    So here's the parts truck Warranty Tag Info, it is a 1966. F25AE860721 I'll run thru it for the fun of it.
    F25 = F-250 4X2
    A = 240 for 1966, The 65, 240 should have J designating it.
    E = Built in Mahwah NJ.
    860721 = Built in May of 1966

    Other info on plate following above.
    129 = 129" wheelbase
    W = Paint Color, Medium Blue (Marlin Blue)
    F253 = (NOTE this web site does not list a F253, It lists, F250 = 7500 lbs GVW, F-251 = 4800 lbs GVW. MY truck, the plate lists it as a 6,000 GVW. MY Assumption is that the F253 is for the 6,000 lbs weight designation). ADDENDUM, found on another site, (F253 = F250 2WD, 6,000 lbs. GVWR)
    281 = 2 is the- Medium blue crush vinyl and medium blue wicker pattern vinyl seat.
    81 is Standard Cab, listing says, A=Standard Cab, B=Custom Cab.
    C = Transmission - 66, 3 speed, Manual Light Duty, Ford manufactured.
    24 = Rear Axel- 4.10-1 ratio, Dana/Spicer 60
    129 = Certified Net Horse Power
    4,000 = RPM's
    13 = DSO Code = New York (Domestic Special Order, If the the truck is standard production, only the district code will appear) So Special Options.

    Okay, so now I have the VIN - at least from the title. It's F25J2691895. Instead of having 2 letters after the F25, it has the J then 2. Then 6 numbers like yours and the list on LMC. This means that 1) the VIN on the title and actual VIN on the truck are different, or 2) there's something peculiar about this truck. I'm thinking #1 since the J would indicate a 223 I6 which wasn't used in 1965. Can't be a holdover since it is the later I6 with the intake and exhaust both on the left side of the engine.

    The Red Book says the 240 was the base in both 1965 and 1966, with the 300 and V8s being optional.

    The J was a 240 for 1965. Your Vin Build date is, MAY 1965, to me that says it's a 1965 truck. See the third line in my last post. As far as the 2 after the J,....typo error??? build plants were all letters far as I can see. You should ask for a clear picture of the Warranty Plate. Even if the plate shows J2, still could be an error, leading to paper work being wrong, BUT correct as far as legalities go. Final truth being the # stamped in the frame (in 2 locations).

    He's telling me the data plate is missing from the door. He was supposed to be getting the VIN off the frame, but I never heard back from him.

    For everyone keeping up with this, the seller found the VIN. It’s F25DL26918. WTH!

    So the F25D says 352 V-8, Now the L??? 26918. We've been chasing this rabbit a long time and all you wanted to know was how to tell a 240 from a 300. Seems this truck was built with 352. Truck seems to have a lot of history. All we looked at, your trying to decide whether to buy it???

    On difference 240-300, seems the stroke is the difference. Check the link below and read all the way thru. If no access to the truck, ya can't check it.
