Hi all. How hard is it to rebuild my 2001 3.0 Ranger/Mazda B3000 rear end, &. what books should I look for in doing said rebuild, or can I put a 4whl drive rear or is there limited slip that fits in there?

Ranger rear ends are a dime a dozen.
Just match your specs against what a J-yard has, and in a couple hours you are good to go...........cost about $200
Re-building will be a lot more $$$ and time.

Swapping out a Ranger/B-series rear axle is VERY easy, so easy a person with std. hand tools and a modest amount of mechanical know-how can do it in a day.
Jack-stands and floor jack are mandatory.

Welcome aboard B3000. Dave is one of our Ranger experts. I had to do a rear end on my 87 F250 and found that matching it to a junk yard find was so much cheaper than trying to rebuild, that it wasn't even a close call.

Same rear, just sits on different spring perches

how do I figure that out

The spring perches are on the frame of the truck, and play no role in the mechanics of the rear

What they do, is add ground clearance to the truck

The only things you need to look for, are

    1) the tag on the back by the cover plate
It has a series of numbers that tell you gear ratio, limited slip, etc

    2) Whether it has drum or disc brakes
