Hi. New to Ford's and have a problem. My son bought a 1961 F250, L6, 223 ci, T98a 4-speed. The shifter boot is missing so I have nothing to match up. There are no screw holes in the transmission cover for the boot, so I'm assuming that it either fits like a grommet or there is some kind of retainer that holds the boot and snaps into the floor. I have been through the Ford Parts Catalog, both text and illustrations, searched online catalogs and pdf's, emailed a few truck parts specialists, all to no avail. I've searched high and low for a photo of an interior that includes the this boot. All I have found is that some people apparently adapt a different boot and drill holes in the floor to accept it. It usually doesn't look very professional. I am an originalist and would very strongly prefer to get it back to original, esp. without drilling holes in an otherwise perfect panel. Any help appreciated. Photo(s) of original GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Go to LMC truck. Com several different options offered there They so one for a NP transmission that is a grommet style that has a lip for both sides of the cover and no screws

I guess you mean here: https://www.lmctruck.com/1957-72-ford/fb-1957-72-floor-shift-components. Already been there. They do not have this application listed. I contacted them and they confirmed that they do not have one for my truck. NP=New Process? Mine is a T98a, which is a Warner. The only one I see there that appears to be "grommet style" also appears to be rectangular, while I need circular. Am I missing something? Thanks!

I went to their web site, selected F250 2wd 1961, and found the transmission repair parts
It shows two round ones with no bolt holes , shows it’s for a 65 with a new process transmission, and doesnt give measurements. For $8.00 I would try it, if I can’t find original.
You can also try Mac’s ford parts and Dennis Carpenter
If that doesn’t work there is a guy in Miami called Ford Era. That has a lot of used F250 trucks

Worst case there are both round and rectangular shifter boots of varying sizes that are universal. Amazon has a ton of them.

The 2 rounds ones w/o bolt holes (#'s 5 & 7) are actually the same part, but one is included in a kit (#5). As you mentioned, it is for a different year and different transmission. It also looks similar to the 'lower boot' I already have (see pic). Been to Mac & Carpenter, no luck. I'll check into the other one you mentioned. Thanks.

Yes, in a worst case scenario, maybe. But I'm not there yet. Thanks.

Perhaps I'm, stating the obvious, but a medium truck may use something similar. I think my '62 F700 grain truck has a round hole like that.

Might be. Which transmission is it? Would much appreciate a photo or two, if you can. Can you measure the hole size for me? A shifter shaft diameter (as measured near the boot attachment point) might be helpful. I'll be back Tuesday. Thanks.

Measurements will be a long time coming. Truck is 30 miles away, and the road is snowed in.
292 hd with 4 spd. and split axle. Switch for split has a conduit which runs down the shifter, I don't know if the boot has a bump for it, or just stretches over. Canadian transmission codes are weird, CC1TT 7004F, The manual shows warner T98A.

Gotchya. Mine is 95 miles away. I'll see if I can find it for your truck since I can't find my own (that I can tell). I'm betting they're the same. I didn't consider the possibility that it's a stretch fit instead of a regular bellows-looking boot. That would more than likely be a grommet type of fit. Thanks.

Looks like the hole on mine is abt 5 1/4" in diameter. I found some info elsewhere that was posted by a retired Ford parts specialist. He said there has NEVER been a boot listed for the T98.
The attached photo is from my parts catalog. There was a plate on some, and a (I'm guessing high-density) foam piece (possibility of 2 sizes) that fit between the transmission and the transmission cover. Of course, neither is still available. I'll post again when I come up with a part source, or, more than likely, after I've fabricated something.

There isn't a shift boot for the T-98 because Ford didn't offer one!

This is what my '61 Merc. 350 has. It is very soft, almost like a dish sponge, which may explain why most are gone. DSCF5791 (2).JPG #ad
I know it's a bad picture, but it's stored at a farmyard without power, I couldn't vacuum the area.
