Hey all. I have a 2005 F150 5.4. In trying to fix a timing code, I replaced my VCT solenoids. Well, I replaced one of them, the driver's side one. While trying to replace the one on the passenger side I dropped the screwdriver bit down into the valve assembly. At first I could see it through the hole where the solenoid went and I got a grabber on it both times but both times it slipped loose and went deeper.

Finally I took the valve cover off. I can't see it anywhere. I bought a borescope and spent two hours looking for it but cannot find it anywhere.

Yes, I feel like an idiot, thanks for asking.

Is there any possibility it is in my oil pan?

Oh, and by the way: although I can't prove it yet, I'm pretty sure the timing problem ws due to a low oil condition.

I'd try snaking down a magnetic grabber, it'll pick up anything down there not attached to something if it's close enough. If that doesn't work, I'll pull the pan.
